Bacchae Underworld | PREMIERE

The Bacchae is considered to be one of Euripides’ greatest tragedies. But what if we told the story in a different way?

According to Euripides’ tragedy of The Bacchae, Dyonysus, the god of wine and fertility, as well as insanity and ritual madness, was born to disrupt order in the city of Thebes. He had to create a world full of madness, chaos and sexual debauchery.

But Greek director Zoe Xanthopoulou reverses the tragedy in Bacchae Underworld. In a world full of unruly instincts and pleasures, a new god appears.

He proposes a new lifestyle as the only solution for the true well-being of the people: a society defined by rational laws, rules, and decision-making. The stranger persuades society to adapt to this new normal. But at what cost?

This music theatre performance is a unique collaboration between director Zoe Xanthopoulou and composer Nikos Ioakeim with a cast of Greek and deaf German actors. It will premiere at STET in The Hague (Theater aan het Spui), May 2022.

This performance uses Greek spoken language and has English surtitles.

Ένας θεός ανασφαλής, ο Διόνυσος, εισβάλλει σ’ ένα πάρτυ όπου διασκεδάζουν όλα τα πρόσωπα της ζωής του. Εκεί θα αναζητήσει την επιβεβαίωση που τόσο ποθεί. Με κάθε τρόπο: θα πει ψέματα, θα υποδυθεί ότι είναι κάποιος άλλος, θα χαρεί, θ’ αμφισβητήσει, θα στήσει παγίδες. Η νίκη του όμως θα του φέρει ικανοποίηση και ηρεμία;

Οι Βάκχες είναι μια πασίγνωστη τραγωδία του αρχαίου έλληνα συγγραφέα Ευριπίδη. Οι Βάκχες, στο ομώνυμο έργο, ήταν το πλήθος που ακολουθούσε αυτόν τον νέο θεό και τον πίστευε.

Στην παράσταση αυτή, ο Διόνυσος είναι ένας άνθρωπος με άγχος, συμπλέγματα και επιθυμίες, που θέλει να τακτοποιήσει τον κόσμο μέσα του κι έξω από αυτόν. Το κείμενο της γνωστής τραγωδίας συνομιλεί με τον σύγχρονο άνθρωπο και την ανάγκη του να ανήκει κάπου.
Στη σκηνή συμπράτουν έλληνες ηθοποιοί με γερμανούς κωφούς ηθοποιούς. Συνομιλούν στα ελληνικά, στη γερμανική νοηματική και στη γλώσσα του σώματος. Μια νέα θεατρική γλώσσα προκύπτει επί σκηνής, ένα πείραμα για ένα νέο κόσμο που προβάλλει.
Το κοινό, ως θεατές αυτού του «πάρτυ», γίνονται συνοδοιπόροι του Διονύσου σε αυτή την αναζήτηση της ταυτότητάς του.
Ο κόσμος του καθενός είναι διαφορετικός αλλά όλοι μαζί είμαστε ένας κόσμος ολόκληρος.

Myths Undone Workshop I Sunday 8 May

Prepare for a deep-dive into the head of a Greek director! This workshop helps participants delve into the depths of how to work with classic texts in theatre. Greek director, Zoe Xanthopoulous will explain how she usually breaks down stereotypical forms in ancient tragedy and how they are interpreted. The workshop is an exciting mix of theoretical and practical knowledge, where your opinion and viewpoint matter!
