Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves! (5+)

Adapted by Oliver Gray

Family performance in the open-air
performed by well-known and well-loved
British open-air theatre company ILLYRIA

Adapted from One Thousand and One Nights (otherwise known as the Arabian Nights).
Like all the stories in this towering literary classic, it is packed with cliff-hangers, larger-than-life characters, and laughs galore. Young Ali Baba stumbles across an enchanted cave when he overhears the magic words that open it: “Open Sesame!”. Inside the cave he finds untold amounts of gold and jewels, and takes some of it home…
But when the Robber King comes looking for the missing treasure supported by an army of 40 angry thieves – will he and his family survive?

The show is notable for a scene where one character polishes off most of the thieves – 37 to be precise, and you can count each one – with a cast of just five of the most hardworking actors in the business!

Illyria was the first company to tour children’s theatre on this scale in the open-air touring sector. Now in their 28th season, they return with one of their most popular ever shows: the perfect summer fun for thieves and vagabonds aged 5+!

Open Air Theatre Company Illyria

Illyria is an intrepid band of five actors who perform Shakespeare’s plays, entirely uncut, direct from the First Folio, the most authoritative edition of Shakespeare’s plays. It’s swift, it’s polished and it’s spoken beautifully (uniquely among open-air touring theatre companies Illyria’s artistic director has published articles on verse-speaking) – and scholars on both sides of the Atlantic agree that Illyria’s performance style is the most authentically Elizabethan to be seen. Since 1992 they have performed on what feels like every patch of grass from Land’s End to John O-Groats – and also in Ireland, France, Germany, Holland, Switzerland, USA and Canada. They are the only UK open-air touring company to have won no less than 4 international awards, and have a well-deserved reputation for being, quite simply, the best.
