INFORMATION

The Auction was first performed in 2007 at the Plantsoen Theater in Leiden in its original Dutch version.
This black comedy –let’s call it an attractive shade of dark grey- was picked up by TUSK international TC and STET as an example of Dutch playwriting translating beautifully into English language comedy, in every sense of the word.

TUSK is delighted that playwright Tineke Endema has handed over her intriguing story on betrayal, scheming, love, loneliness and in-your-face cat-fighting to show TUSK’s innocent and flawless audience (we know who you are) what relationships can be all about. As you can imagine -even if you’re innocent-, it ain’t pretty.

What do you do when you find out your husband had an affair before he died and that this affair lasted ten years? You are too late for retribution, that’s for sure.

What do you do when you find yourself trapped by the widow of your deceased lover, unwilling to hand over the only memento of ten years of passionate adoration? You are too late to say sorry, but you also make sure you keep your guard up as she might have some aces up her sleeve.

The Auction is about two women who gave all their love and most of their adult lives to a man who must have been a woman-magnet but who also held secrets for both of his love-interests. The women measure each other up, they weigh up their own power and that of their opponent, and they compare the love that they received from the person who -suspiciously and conveniently- can’t be there anymore to explain himself.

The play is also about the loneliness and insecurity these women feel because they are now on their own having to deal with life and all its lies; apart from that, they know they will never get full answers to their questions, not even from each other.

The characters from The Auction don’t have pure intentions and don’t put things simply. But as Oscar Wilde said already: The truth is rarely pure and never simple.
