Information
Banned in Malta, prompting walk-outs in Edinburgh, causing splits amongst critics, Anthony Neilson’s Stitching took the world by storm when it was first performed in 2002. The sexually violent play dives deeply into the intimacy of a faithless violent and dark relationship to witness the birth of a tender love. Anthony Neilson: "I feel bad that audiences walked out, but I can't write for cowards. If something shocks me, I don't just walk away from it, I ask myself why I am shocked by it." Neilson came up with the main image of the play whilst in a shop in Amsterdam. Anthony Neilson’s plays are performed all over the world, though usually in small houses that cater to adventurous theatergoers.
The curse of theatre, says Neilson, is that many people see it as both educational and effeminate — “the two worst brushes you can tar anything with. Whereas what you want to see is something that moves you, that provides spectacle but also food for thought.”
This October the play premieres in The Netherlands almost 10 years after its first appearance, in a production performed by Laurent de Montalembert and Marene van Holk.
Anthony Neilson

A creator of pioneering, taboo‐breaking new work, Anthony Neilson writes and directs witty, bold and compassionate plays that explore unchartered psychological territories.
Neilson was a collaborator of, and in some ways mentor to, the likes of Sarah Kane and Mark Ravenhill. But his plays are entirely his own. Rough diamonds of dark, dramatic poetry, they mine for beauty in the dimly lit shaft of our secret sexual fantasies and fears.
