Mevlana Jellaludin Rumi is one of the world's
most widely read poets. Rooted in 13th century Islamic culture,
Rumi's universality of spirit transcends creeds, lands and even
time, as a profound voice of inspiration. UNESCO proclaimed 2007
the RUMI year, as it was the 800th anniversary of Rumi’s birth.
His passionate, wise and beautiful words still have a remarkable
ability to touch contemporary audiences - firing the imagination
and nourishing the heart. It is a positive force in the nowadays
sometimes sharply edged debate about Islam. Rumi's is a voice
that needs to be listened to.
This performance travelled all over the world.
And now for the first time a Dutch audience will be able to see
this show in the inspiring surroundings of the Museum Beelden
aan Zee in Scheveningen-The Hague. Ramsden captures the spirit
of the great man, bringing Rumi’s words and spirit alive in a
way that many people have found deeply moving, even transforming.
This unique performance leaves audiences in no doubt why Rumi’s
inspired words are so widely read, also in the West, 800 years
after his birth.
For this performance he will be accompanied by
the Dutch jazz guitarist Eelco van de Meeberg (1977). A daring
combination to build a bridge between East and West. Van de
Meeberg studied at the Rotterdam Conservatory and in New York
with Peter Bernstein and Mark Withfield. In 2003 he was awarded
the Erasmus Jazz Award.
